Side-by-Side is a drama about parenting: the highs, the lows, and the long roads between them. Side-by-Side is also about the people who walk alongside caregivers on their parenting journey.

Season 2 of Side by Side, which began airing in July 2020, continues Joyce’s journey as a mother to an older toddler and learning to love again after Siviwe’s betrayal. Joyce and her best friend, Lerato, find themselves paying it forward and passing on the parenting wisdom they received in Season 1 to two newcomers in their community. Luphumzo is just 17 years old when she finds out she is pregnant, and needs the support of her friends and healthworker aunt to come to terms with the new direction her life has taken. Babalwa finds the pressure of pregnancy and responsibility too much to handle and turns to alcohol, with detrimental consequences to her newborn baby.

Side-by-Side incorporates health messaging across the entire spectrum of care children need to develop, along with stresses relevant to life in South Africa today: HIV/Aids, violence, substance abuse and unemployment. Never pessimistic or moralistic, Side-by-Side entertains listeners by celebrating the joys of children, friendship, and family.

The Side-by-Side radio show is made possible through a partnership between SABC Education and the National Department of Health.
